This quarter, we chose to focus on issues of violence and education that impact Chicago youth. On November 10th, the CEO of Urban prep, a preparatory school aimed at changing the low graduation and college completion rates for young men in Chicago, will be speaking at McCormick Tribune from 5-6pm. We will also hold a discussion panel on November 8th with SESP Professors Dr. Carol Lee and Dr. Dan Lewis, Maddie Orenstein, college and career coach at Carl Schurz High School, Marcus Campbell, Director for Student Supports and Racial Equity at Evanston Township High School, and Eric Brown, Illinois director of the National Education Association. On November 15th, a second panel on violence prevention will be held with Tio Hardiman, the director of CeaseFire, Diane Latiker, founder of Kids Off The Block, Lara Brown, the director of Broadway Youth Center at Howard Brown, and Kathryn Saclarides, the director of violence prevention at Enhance Chicago. Speakers will present their work and students will the have the chance to ask questions and generate a discussion. NCDC site leaders will be present at both panels to discuss specific volunteer options. We are very excited to begin to discuss issues education and violence in Chicago this quarter, and hope to see everyone there!
