Description: Volunteers help out with ESL and citizenship classes, by doing individual tutoring and helping the clients. Centro Romero primarily targets Spanish-speaking immigrants and knowledge of Spanish may be helpful. Some classes may require training.

South East Asia Center

Description: Volunteers tutor, mentor and play with the children. South East Asia Center serves a mostly Vietnamese and Eritrean clientele; volunteers work with groups of children from either kindergarten -1st grade or 5th-6th grade. Group site, no training required.

Heartland Alliance

Description: Heartland Alliance’s mission is to respond to the human needs of endangered populations such as the poor, the isolated, and the displaced. Volunteers teach ESL and play with the children in the site’s youth program.  No training is required.

Chinese Mutual Aid

Description: Chinese Mutual Aid is a site for individual volunteers. Tutors for adults, teach reading and writing while tutors for children work in the Family Literacy Program and help children to read, write, do math, and create artwork. Some training is required.

Description: Volunteers are paired with a member at a site and are able to work with them on their English weekly. This site requires very regular and dependable site leaders and is a great opportunity to form a close relationship with participants.

Centro Romero Afterschool

Description: Volunteers typically tutor children from ages 7-12. Each volunteer works with 1 to 3 children, and is expected to help them finish their homework, practice math, reading, and spelling, and then play games with them. Some knowledge of Spanish may be helpful, but not required.

Student Enterprise for Language Foundations (SELF)

Description: Volunteers work as ESL tutors at an elementary school (Peirce or Stockton) teaching teach reading, writing, and other basic English skills. Proficiency in Spanish, Polish, and/or Urdu is strongly recommended. Volunteers can go in groups or individually.

Description: RefugeeOne (IRIM) helps out immigrant families transition into the American culture and living. My site involves by helping out at the after school program organized by IRIM for the refugee children. Volunteers tutor and play with children who participate in the program. They also help facilitating other activities at the after school program.

Description: LIFT clients and trained student volunteers work one-on-one to find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and obtain quality referrals for services like childcare and healthcare. Training is required.
